Being from NoVA, I have had plenty of exposure to the best of Vietnamese restaurants. This place is clean, well-lit, and we had perfectly good service. I had the garden rolls which were good and the Pho (sirloin). The pho was also good, but I thought they were a little stingy with the meat and noodles. The broth was quite good. Next time I'm here, I will try one of the meals. I don't think you can go wrong with this place.

Love love love love this place. The pho is incredible! The flavors are fantastic. And they have bubble tea! My husband and I go to this place as much as possible. The food and people are both wonderful.

Easily the best pho place in the area. Service is excellent and so it the food. Broth taste fresh, and the spring rolls are crisp and compact with goodness. I always get the large pho with all the meats minus the tripe meat.

Yay...Vietnamese food on the Peninsula! Pretty basic menu- noodle soups, sandwiches, and grilled meats. I've never had pho in Virginia and was a little apprehensive, but this place is good stuff! I started off with the egg rolls, 4 for $2.50, which were small but tasty- lots of meat, just the way I like it. I got the #7, noodle soup with round steak, brisket, and tripe. The small size is generous and made for a filling dinner. I liked the steak and brisket, but didn't even touch the tripe because it just looked gross (hey, I wanted to be adventurous). The interior is nicer than expected. I thought it would be a most casual joint, like Moe's. But there is waiter service- nice guys that were friendly and patient, even when people ask for fried rice and kung pao chicken (don't come here expecting Chinese food). But you do seat yourself and pay at the counter. Great place for quick, casual, and healthy lunch. Just not for vegetarians because I didn't see one thing on the menu that didn't include meat/seafood (PS: head cheese is not cheese). I guess they could enjoy some iced coffee...

Pho here was great! Who would have thought, in the VA? Haha . I had the lotus salad, it really wasn't lotus, it was moor. But good. I could do with or without it. I had the Beef, Tripe, Tendon Pho - Mmm! Ranks right up there with NYC! STaff was awesome. I was drinking my drink whole waiting on line to pay and they approached me with a takeout cup- talk about great service! I would definitely come back again when I'm in town!

Not bad...as long as you don't get the sammiches...not bad... In a strip mall by the mall. Definitely a business type lunch crowd with many guilo abound. They have all your favorite ciet dishes on the menu from pho to bun to sammiches and sinh to. Typical pricing for your viet place though they charge you a buck fittynine for tea. The sammiches are a bit high, pretty much everything is a buck more than normal for a viet place but thats pretty standard for your ameican friendly places. Seems to be a jasmin tea that is a bit over brewed and the pot cam out half full, but im sure theyll refill it for you should you get through it all. The pho broth was pretty good! Deep and rich in colour. A good bit of flavor, missing cloves though. A lot of lime in the broth, which im not killer on, but thats ok. The beef was plentiful and the noodles were copious but they were a bit over stuck together and didnt come apart quite right. Very small veggie plate, but they would have given more had i asked for it. The sammie....was kinda pretty bad though. The bread was not crispy at all and too thick. Too much innerds to ot unfortinately. There was only a little bit of meat in it and a good bit of veggies, but all in all pretty meh. So...good pho bad sammich

Had a burning desire for Pho today. Googled Pho and the nearest restaurant was Pho 79 on Jefferson Blvd. The service was good. The server very pleasant. I had vegetarian spring rolls and vegetarian Pho. Both were excellent. The Pho was packed with vegetables and had some tofu as well. Would definitely return here!

So I went back today for lunch. Still tops! Flavorful broth, good quality meat and quick service mean that I'll return again!

We are regulars at this place. It is pretty darn tasty. We usually get Pho (number 4, especially) but we sometimes order the meat skewers and the pork sandwich which are both amazing. The service is fast and sometimes friendly, depending on the waiter that you get. You can order for take-out, but when you do, one has to get the large sizes of Pho for some reason. Love the food! Returning often...

When your Vietnamese friends take you there you take note. Very clean and fast, friendly service. I love the Pho and the rice dishes as well. The prices are not bad either! Oh they have bubble tea too!! Lots of flavors to include taro, and ube!! Mmmm happiness! ;)

This place is my sister and my favorite regular spot for dinner. The food is excellent in quality. Always fresh and flavorful. I went through a phase where I tried to make pho and discovered it was harder than it seems. So that only made me appreciate great pho all the more. I routinely get the chicken pho and I think it's just divine. Although by the end of dinner, the broth is red from all the satay I put in it. I like food super hot, but the broth is just as wonderful with no enhancements. The wait staff are very helpful and responsive. In addition, the prices are great for dining out. I love Pho 79. :)

First time having Vietnamese! I don't remember what I got, but it was good. The portion sizes were generous, the food seemed very fresh and full of vegetables. Upon walking out I also realized they had a shelf of toys to keep the younger patrons happy. The staff was very friendly as well.

  • S A.

Really good soup :) I had the Pho Ga which is a chicken noodle soup and my bf had one of the beef pho soups. I tried both and while I thought the chicken soup was awesome, I was not a fan of the beef soup. My boyfriend also preferred the chicken soup. Something about the beef broth just tasted funny to me.I will definitely be back for the chicken soup though. The veggie pho also looks great but I have not tried it yet. The portions are huge-a large size pho would be more than enough for me and my bf to split, which makes it a great deal! Also-if you eat there and have leftovers they package the noodles separate from the broth which is awesome-this keeps your noodles from soaking up all the broth and turning into a mushy mess.

Love it! Cant complain about anything. Food is great and customer service is top notch. Definitely recommend!

The food was absolutely fantastic here but the to-go prices were shocking. I was really disappointed that I can't get the food to go for my family of four and pay less than 40.00, especially when only one really had anything but veggies in it. I would've loved to have made this my go-to for quick meals when it's too late to cook but unfortunately 10.00 apiece for soup seems a little high. Perhaps if they offered the smaller sizes as an option it would be okay. The staff was awesome and very friendly.

The Best Pho place. The broth is delicious and the flavors are intense. They have chicken, beef and shrimp skewers that will give your mouth an orgasm. They offer beers from around the world. The environment was very clean and the staff are all so friendly and were constantly checking up on us to make sure we were doing alright. My hubby and I drive 2 hours , once a month and stay the weekend just to have their delicious food. This place is a must go.

My boyfriend and I tried this for the first time a couple weeks ago and now we've been back 3 or 4 times. The food is excellent and well-priced. We've never had to wait for seating. We get a new bubble tea every time we go because they are so good. I love that the chefs have been willing to make me vegetarian-friendly Bun dishes every time I've eaten there. My boyfriend has tried and enjoyed several of the sandwiches and his only complaint was that the head cheese in one of the sandwiches could definitely be improved upon. The only reason I give this place 4 stars is because of its weird seating procedure. It is pretty much seat yourself, but there seems to be too little attention by the wait-staff to noticing new customers. Usually we've had a wait several minutes before finally being greeted and given menus. Every time we go to Pho to eat, we see new customers come in and become confused and flustered about the seat yourself design, too. No one ever really seems sure about the right course of action - the restaurant really just needs to put a sign on the door telling customers what is expected.

Pretty standard for a Pho restaurant with above average Pho. The broth in the Pho Tai was dark and full of flavor. I wanted to tip the bowl and drink it all. The meat was sliced thin and served rare enough to cook in the hot broth. The vegetables were incredibly fresh and they give you a decent chunk of lime to squirt in your soup. I like more than just one wedge of lime so this is nice. The noodles were slightly firm and cooked well. I got the small Pho and an unsweet tea for about $10. A little more expensive than a lot of Pho places but still worth it. The service was fast and friendly.

2nd time at this restraunt. Busy place. Good service, pho was great and so were spring rolls. I recommend !

  • Sean B.

Very very good stuff here. Busy place, but the help was quick, polite, and efficient. Very meaty pho, excellent broth, and veggies were fresh. The one little ding was that I prefer the noodles a bit thicker (my preferences), so not bestest place.

  • Amber H.

DELICIOUS PHO! I am an Asian girl from northern va and I have to say this was one of the better pho bowls I've had. Waiters were also super chill. The whole vibe was laid back and casual which I love, and the decorations / interior was appealing and clean.

  • Kevin P.

Great place... Wasnt sure at first if it was all about "fast food" or "good pho". I had the summer rolls and Pho with all the different meat, even ordered extra meat thinking there may not be enough. It was actually allot of meat that came with the order. The broth was okay, but you can spice it up with siracha. Fast service and friendly staff. I'll be seeing them again soon.

Friday afternoon I was driving back from lunch at another establishment in Jefferson Commons and had to do a double take when I saw the giant orange lettering. Pho? In Jefferson Commons?! Upon returning to work, I quickly looked up to get some more information and was excited to see that Newport News is now home to their own Pho 79. That night I headed down to try it out with my adventurous boyfriend and we were greeted by smiling faces and a busy dining room. The smells fueled our appetites and we quickly sat at a table. The customer service is outstanding!!! And the food...ohhh the food! I left one happy girl and already informed the crew I'd be back over and over again! Definitely try the Spring Rolls and of course, the Pho. Pho 79 has a small but great selection of different dishes to try out. Appetizers (Spring Rolls & Egg Rolls), seven different kinds of Banh Mi (Vietnamese Sandwiches all under $4), ten variations of Pho (Vietnamese Noodle Soup), Hu Tieu and Rice dishes. I will also add there is a childrens menu with two selections that are "kid friendly". Service, taste and prices are all great!

Very pleased with our lunchtime visit to Pho 79. Yummy garden rolls and the Lotus salad was fantastic. I had the Pho #4 and enjoyed it very much. My husband had the #7 and there was maybe one piece of tripe in the whole dish. The only nitpick I have is that for a place with "Pho" in the name, the noodles were a bit less substantial than one might expect. However we came away very pleased and full. I really wanted to try the bubble tea but I was full from the rest of our meal. Like everything else I'm sure it would have been satisfying. If we could give half-stars I would bump Pho 79 to a 3.5 rating for sure. However it just wasn't special enough in terms of food or service for me to put it at a 4.

Of all the places I've eaten at in this area, Pho 97 reminds me most of the great Asian restaurants we used to frequent in San Diego. So far I have only had the H2 which is not called a pho on the menu, but it is pho like. It's soup base with shrimp, pork, and thin rice noodles. With all the right fixins like bean sprouts, crispy onions, herbs, green onion, a little hoisin sauce, and some rooster sauce I don't need anything else. The noodles in particular are straight from pho heaven. Just the right texture and flavor, thin and springy, yet tender. They hold their consistency in the hottest of soup. 4 stars!

yum! I made a trip here visiting my little sister in Virginia. After being deprived of Vietnamese food for quiet some time, this place really hit the spot. I ordered a small pho beef soup with a banh mi. Everything was delicious and fresh and our food came out quick.

This use to be my regular pho place now. Not because of taste, but because of convenience. Their pho prices are comparable to those in the area I guess. But definitely more expensive than Cali. The service isn't great...you walk in feeling like a lost deer, and certain waiters don't have the most patience or customer skills, but all in all..nothing where I find extremely rude or offending where I wouldn't give them my service again. I've had their pho, most of the time, it doesn't quiet hit the spot. I always feel like its missing something. Not quiet sure what. Their rice dishes are alright. Expensive tho. I don't care too much for their smoothies.

Stopped Labor Day weekend while on a visit with friends in Norfolk. Conveniently located in a shopping plaza off the main drag - it was easy to find. The place has a nice cafe style dining room and the added touch of bar seating for a solo diner or just a bubble tea. Was looking to be refreshed after and long drive. Ordered fried rolls and Pho Thai to eat in and and a Bahn Mi Dac Biet to take out. Service was typical of youngsters, either overly attentive after you take each bite then forgetting to bring what you asked for when you finally want assistance (no foul there for the prices charged.) The fried rolls were just OK, nothing special, and the nuoc cham was bland. The Pho was decent but lacked the rich flavor profile in the stock foodies are seeking out. Bahn Mi was tasty and served on a nice crispy baguette. In all, it is a decent spot for an area not overflowing with Vietnamese dining options.

I have to disagree with Joel B. I've eaten at some "top end" Pho shops in NoVa and this one stands up to those very well. The broth is very deep and has multiple layers and the garnishes are fresh and flavorful. The decor is what it is, it is a strip mall in Newport News. This is a Vietnamese noodle shop and I go there for a hot and good tasting lunch/dinner. The staff is quick and attentive and you can't ask for more for less than $10. Also, my wife loves this place and she knows good food. Go and enjoy some good Vietnamese noodle soup and leave a nice tip for some hardworking staff.

Delicious! I'm a regular now. I have always felt like they've given me great service despite the fact that its very busy. I love the fresh ingredients and flavors they provide with the pho soup. The restaurant is very clean and well maintained. My recommendation is to try a bubble tea if you haven't yet! Its a nice sweet treat during or after your meal. The shrimp spring rolls are great as well as the lotus salad.

The place was good, clean, food was decent, ok service. Only things negative about this place was that they didn't give us individual plates to eat the appettisers, and the pho broth was a little bland, but not too bad. price was kind of high. The amount of vegetable was decent. Overall I'd say this is a pretty good place, especially for being in Newport News area.

I've been here several times now and this place has consistently exceeding my standards. Great food (Pho Tai Nam is exceptional) and great service, quick too. I've always received my Pho within about 5 minutes and the wait staff is always on top of it there to bring refills on drinks. Word of advice though, make sure you go hungry if you get the large bowl, it's quite a bit.

  • Terry K.

Tasty soup! Service was slow. Excessive wait for someone to take our order. Also we never got our check to pay the cashier, so I had to go to the cashier and tell them what table I sat at. Too bad the service was bad. But the food was good. It was lunch time but not overly crowded. Not sure this had a role in our poor service.

Not a whole lot of option for pho out in the peninsula but they have pretty decent Pho. Broth is good, if its not up to your standards, nothing that some hoisin and sriracha can't fix. They also have grilled stuff over rice and from what my wife tells me, they're good too. The cherry on top for me with this place is the Boba drinks!!!

I am Con Lai -- I know Vietnamese food and this place is pretty much comparable to the PHO in NO VA - I am also from the DC / Arlington VA area so eating PHO is like eating breakfast - daily! The PHO here is very good - a tasty broth. I love that the kids menu as the portions are smaller for the little ones and a good variety and costs less of course so no wasting. I drive from Williamsburg just to eat here as a nice treat for the kids who grew up eating pho.

The best Pho I have ever had!! The service is great here. Great server, and the food comes out pretty quick. There egg rolls are yummy as well. Every time I come in town I have to visit this place.

It is in my top 5 pho places in the country. The broth was awesome, the meat was top-quality and the service was increds! Definitely hit it up if you are around!

So happy this place is here so that I can go whenever I'm visiting my parents who live in NN. The pho is actually quite good and it always hits the spot. As appetizers, the chao tom is good. It's a little on the greasy side, but good. The lotus salad is also a good starter: crunchy, and fresh, and tastes best with the fish sauce dumped right over it. The goi cuon are good too, but could use a little more shrimp and herbs. Cha gio are the weakest I've had in a restaurant. They're missing a few ingredients, like mushrooms and rice noodles. Can't go wrong with the prices on the apps though, so definitely worth a try. I've also had the bun thit nuong which is really good, if a little heavy on the lettuce (but also heavy on the meat, which is great). I wish they had some dessert drinks other than the bubble tea, like che ba mau which I love.

  • Lou M.

The soups here are great! The fresh basil, bean sprouts and jalapenos compliment the soups well. The broths are very flavorful and never overpowering. I always stop by here before hitting Trader Joe's to shop for food on a full stomach. I love it!

Great Vietnamese food. Craptastic service. Im Vietnamese so I understand that these places arent supposed to have stellar service. But, when you mess up your customer's order, at least ATTEMPT to correct it. My husband and I used to be pretty loyal customers but this last experience left a bad taste in our mouths. Guess we will be going to our korean spot a lot more often. But, hey, I guess Pho 79 has so many customers it doesnt give a __ about losing our patronage.

I was visiting from the DC/Baltimore area and I am SO glad that my cousin recommended this place. From my experience with Pho is a hit or miss from just ok to OMG!!! This place is top on my list for Pho places in the NN area. Traveling with little ones I am always afraid of not being able to find something on the menu for them to eat. That was not the case here!! Not only did we indulge on the Pho, spring rolls but my boys their food so much, we ended up ordering a few items to go for them. The price is very reasonable (once again coming from the DC/Baltimore area), their service was great and the seating is very family friendly. I cant wait to go back!!

I decided to try out some Vietnamese food while in Newport News for business. Standard order of spring rolls, a nice combo pho bowl, and of course a Heineken. Service was extremely quick and polite. My spring rolls came out in about a minute and were pretty decent, pretty standard. About 3 minutes later, my pho arrived. First impressions were good - decent portions and the meat looked good. Sprouts and mint leaves were fairly fresh as well. And the most important part, the broth, was satisfactory. Not too salty or bland. One thing though, they didn't have any hoisin sauce which kind of made me sad, but not by much. Overall a decent Vietnamese place here in Newport News. It's no Vietnam, but it'll do :)

Stopped here to fulfill my pho cravings. It was good to find some Vietnamese cuisine ESP traveling from the south so I was excited to eat some pho. Ordered the lotus salad and pho. I never had lotus that had this spongy looking mushroom with very little lotus , no radish and very few carrots. Did not expect that but I guess it's made differently anywhere. The flavor was there but the mix was not hitting my palate Moving on to the pho. I got the small bowl of pho with brisket, steak and tendon. The bowl was quite small that the contents inside was overfilling. The broth was good and flavorful but the noodles killed it. It was way over cooked , it was so soft that the noodles just melts in your mouth. Overall the soup wasn't to bad. I probably won't be coming back here since it was only a pit stop from my road trip.

So glad to have Pho 79 back on the peninsula in Newport News with another location opening later this summer and near me in Hampton. The first time I ever had Pho (Vietnamese noodle soup) was at a nice multi-cultural restaurant a few years ago. The broth and Asian vegetables were out of this world. I found Pho 79 on Yelp but the store had closed down and moved to Norfolk. Well it is back and I could not wait to try it. Arrived around noon time and was seated quickly. I ordered the number 6 which had round steak, brisket and some other meat in it. A side of bean sprouts, basil, jalapenos. Also available was some hoisin sauce and hot sauce. The broth was very good and silky with a hint of spice that you can feel on the back of your throat. The addition of the crunchy, fresh vegetables was the icing on the cake. Not bad Pho, it was a little greasy and there was some fat at the bottom that kind of interfered with by "slurping" experience at the end. Like most Asian food, I was not expecting to be full after eating it, so I decided to order the large pho. Well, let me just say I did not have to eat for the rest of the day. The large helpings of beef, broth and veggies held me over. Now for the bad. Service: I was approached three time by the servers. When I arrived and took my order, when they brought me my food, and when they brought me the check. Not once did they approach me about refilling my drink or just to even ask has was my meal. Additionally, if you're like me, sanitation is important. Even though the restaurant looked clean, I did not like that the chop-sticks and soup spoons were already in a colander at the table. Anyone who has eaten before you could have touch, sneezed put a bugger on it or anything. This was very unsanitary in my book. I suggest you ask for wrapped chop sticks and silverware because this is very unsanitary. In conclusion the food was good. Service needs improvement and I will be bringing my own chop sticks and spoon. Looking forward to the opening store in Hampton .

3.5 stars Decent, no frills pho joint that's just like many of the others in the HR area. The space is clean with many tables and TVs to keep up with your sports. My family got the usual large pho bowls and it comes with a heaping amount of meat but for carb lovers like me, I thought there wasn't a whole lot of noodle.. so my mom gave me some of hers. hehe. The soup is tasty but still had me reaching for my water later that night :/ The price point isn't bad for the area and service was quick, we were in and out in 30 minutes! This place can be a little hard to find, but thankfully there are signs at the entrance of the shopping center that lead you directly to it.

My husband and I love the food. The spring rolls are never short of awesome. The Pho (VIETNAMESE NOODLE SOUP) outstanding. Staff is wonderful and always clean. You can't get enough. Can't wait for Hampton location to open.

They are always great here with service and food. Good sized portions and menu selections. I like getting the spring rolls over the other options. I've gotten vegetarian and beef pho and had the grilled beef, shrimp and chicken. All were very tasty. I still need to try the chicken noodle soup!

Every now and then I have a craving for pho, even after a large meal I'll want something warm, spicy, and soothing like an aperitif. The pho at this location really hit the spot. I had the small and it was a substantial portion. The steak came out still pink and tender. You can dunk into the broth to cook it a little more if you want. The servers/owners were friendly. Besides pho, they also have a variety of sandwiches (banh mi) and combination rice plates. Extra perk was that their receipt has a 20% off Menchie's froyo which is next door to them. Not sure how long they will have this offer. Unfortunately I had visited the establishments in the reverse order, but I'll know for next time!

I've had the meatball pho and chicken pho, all very good and flavorful. My husband has had the traditional pho here. We both enjoyed the pho and have never had to wait long for our meals. The spring rolls were good and I especially liked the dipping sauce for the rolls! We have never had to wait for a table here and the service is great!

I ordered the vegetarian pho with extra tofu and the taro boba iced tea. The pho was good, it was flavorful. The taro is the best boba flavor. The ambience is casual! The food is priced reasonably. Will definitely recommend to friends and family.

Love this place--my husband and I always order the same thing because it is just too yummy to stray. Pho Ga with spring/egg rolls and a Thai iced tea. The restaurant is clean and so family friendly. The employees are the best and never fail to give us 100% great customer service. It is always a pleasant experience!

Yelped it & Loved it! Randomly yelped this place from I-64 as we were looking for something less fast-foody amongst strip mall city and all the Tropical Smoothies and Moe's Southwest Grills. We dug the food and the experience. Outside of NYC, I've never been in a Pho joint where the waitstaff consisted of young first and second generation Vietnamese hipster kids. If you dig the kind of dining experience (which we do) where your server gives you plenty of space and also has the ability to have an in-depth conversation with you about Vietnamese craft beers then you'll have a great dining experience. There was plenty on the menu for my Gluten-Free needs and for my friend who is a vegan. The ingredients were fresh and their Boba Tea rocks.

I stopped in Pho 79 for a late lunch yesterday. The facility is clean and attractive, designed to give the impression of a colonial style veranda with wood tables, metal chairs, and a faux red tile roof along one wall with seating beneath. Service was prompt and informative after I advised that this was my first visit. I wanted just enough to hold me until dinner, and my server suggested that the Pho and a Banh Mi would be too much. Of the two, we agreed that the Banh Mi Heo Nuang (Grilled Pork Sandwich) was the way to go. While I waited, several more Vietnamese people came in to eat. That gave me confidence something good was happening in the kitchen. About 5 minutes later my meal arrived, along with a complementary small bowl of beef consume. The Baguette was fresh, although lacking in the crunchy crust of a true French bread stick. The Grilled Pork was lean, and the rest of the accompaniments in the sandwich - Pickled Carrot, Daikon Radish, Cucumber, Vietnamese Mayo, Green Onion and Cilantro - were crisp and fresh. The first bite brought it all together nicely, and I happily enjoyed the entire creation. Only a squirt of Sriracha and Hoisin from the table bottle rockets was needed to satisfy my spice tooth. Tasty satisfaction for under $5. Hard to beat that. I will definitely return next time in the area to have some of their Pho and Com dishes, as it was obvious from observing the other customers, that they were relishing their meals.

My husband and I decided to give this place a try even though we were skeptical. The ambiance leaves much to be desired (reason for the 4 star instead of 5), looking like a typical semi-fast food establishment you find a lot around town. But as soon as we opened the doors, these heavenly smells hit us and we knew we had made the right decision. We started with some egg rolls. They were nothing spectacular. I got the Pho #4 with beef and brisket and my husband wanted something on the spicier side, so he got a spicy pho speciality. Neither of us were disappointed. My Pho was so flavorful and warming, and the beef was tender and not fatty at all. The burst of lime and veggies I added made it perfect. The staff were friendly and everything arrived quickly with a smile. I was glad to see a like non-chain restaurant as busy as it was on a Friday night. One tip- the small Pho would have been more than enough me but my hunger got the best of me so I ordered the large. On the bright side, I now have a nice lunch to look forward to tomorrow. I will definitely be back.

This place was great! I've been craving Vietnamese food since I moved here and this hit the spot! We ordered the fresh spring rolls, lemon grass chicken vermicelli, and kids chicken pho. Everything was super fresh and tasty. The chicken was tender and juicy. The staff was fast and friendly. The restaurant was very clean. My only complaint is that they didn't have a better boba tea menu. In Cali they have a standard house milk tea with boba and I can't find it here. The cashier was so kind as to look up a place that has in in D.C for us. Another plus was that they had kids toys to keep the kids entertained! We'll be back here for sure!!

Probably the best pho place because there isn't one around! I've had awesome pho in NYC Chicago Boston. This place is clean and pho is not very authentic. It tastes like the pho I make at home with instant flavorings. However if you need pho you don't need to drive to Richmond or va beach. This place will get the job done.

I have eaten here every other week for over a year. The staff is friendly and the pho is consistently delicious. I have always ordered the egg rolls and the vegetarian pho to share with my man. I come here anytime I want comfort food and it is always a pleasure to visit and eat there. No wonder they win best of hampton roads year after year. I give this place 5 stars for consistent hot food, good atmosphere and hospitality. I may even go there tonight. Like their tee shirts state, 'It's so pho king good!'

This is one of the better Pho spots I've ever been to. The broth is not over powering and I always get fresh crispy veggies. The staff is friendly and very courteous

I went back for a quick snack today because I was in the area. At this point it will be my last visit to this branch of Pho 79 for sure. I have to start with the service wasn't terrible this time. Except that there were 4 employees having lunch in the dining room as if they were customers. I mean I am not sure if this is normal but I know that employees eating in front of customers is usually a standard no no in most establishments. I've worked in a few restaurants and this was never allowed, also bringing in outside food was definitely not allowed. I mean eating is one thing, bringing in Chic Filet is another. The man working behind the main register was super nice and helped me right away. So I was not upset about my service only because I was not one of the many people dining in the restaurant while my waiter had lunch. What did upset me was when I got home and opened my spring rolls and they were literally half the size as they usually are, they were missing shrimp and some of my wrapper ends were very hard. I will try the Va Beach Pho 79, since they seem to have a larger menu and hopefully better service.

Quick service, Friendly atmosphere. The pho was plenty tasty and very reasonably priced. The staff is a bunch of cool kids. This was my first experience eating pho and I will definitely go back!

I've had a lot of pho in my life. I've had it in cities all across America and all over the world. So I was not expecting anything special here in Newport News, Virginia. After all, it's not exactly the culinary capital of America, and it's not exactly known for its Vietnamese population. Which is why I was so surprised by the quality of this pho. I ordered the Pho Dac Biet (which goes by a different name at this restaurant -- but it was the one with tendon in it) and it was delightful. Not the best I've ever had, but EASILY 5 stars for *this* neighborhood. The restaurant itself was clean (no frills) and the service was fast and friendly. Newport News has maybe 4 or 5 restaurants worth going to on a regular basis. This is one of them.

Having moved down to the Peninsula from the DC area a couple of months ago, I knew I would have to look a little harder than I was used to for some good local pho joints. I asked around the office if anyone had any suggestions and most didn't even know what pho was. Luckily Yelp helped me find Pho 79 and I am grateful that it did. I have to be honest, when I first entered the restaurant, the polished appearance of the place coupled with the caucasian servers made me think that this would not be the authentic experience I had hoped for. I'm not complaining about either of these things, it's just not what I'm used to from DC and northern Virginia. The best pho has always seemed to come from the pho places that look the sketchiest from the outside, take cash only and whose servers speak next to no English. Boy was I wrong. The pho is authentic and the portions are huge. I have now been several times and each time have been impressed with the service and food. I wish they'd open one up in Williamsburg, but for now I'm more than willing to make the 20 minute trip a couple of times a month to satisfy my pho cravings.

One of my favourite ph places. The atmosphere is young and lively, and the staff is great whether you're getting take out or staying for dinner. I get the ph tái nm with extra sriracha and hoisin for take out all the time and it's ready in no time. Walking in and picking up is simple and painless as there's never a line. I wish that you could get a small order for take out but they only offer large orders for that, I guess to cut down on plastic container waist? They've never really said why. It's a lot of ph for your money and the broth is tasty. I've taken a group of friends here once and having a sit down dinner was just a great as my take out experiences. Don't forget to ask for a loyalty card! I just found out about this recently and I've been missing out. Visit 7 times and you get a free appetizer on your 8th visit.

This was a great place to get simple, as expected, Vietnamese food. The decor was a little cheesy but cool at the same time and the customer service was very good and attentive. The pho was good but not the most flavorful bowl I've ever had and the appetizers were served promptly and satisfied my cravings. This place is definitely a place you should check out and can continously come back to fulfill your appetite.

Excellent as comfort food. For those who aren't familiar with Pho, it's like the soba noodles bowls at Panera. Yummy, light, and satisfying. Fast service, too!

Good food, but the menu needs some work. Take a cue from Pho 83 over near City Center / Oyster Point and have a more detailed description of what each dish is. Speaking of Pho 83, just go there; the food is a lot better.

I've been twice, and so far I'm loving this place. My first visit I had to try the pho, both because it's their signature dish and because I had a cold and hot soup sounded good. I was not disappointed, as the broth was very flavorful, the meat was tasty, and the vegetable accompaniment was fresh and plentiful. The 'large' order of pho satisfied my manly appetite. On my second visit, I went for my favorite Vietnamese treat: vermicelli. If you've never had this type of dish, just try it. It tastes way better than it sounds, and my description surely won't do it justice. It's a bowl of room temperature rice noodles topped with fresh cucumber, lettuce, carrot, sprouts, green onion, and skewers of meat. You then pour a small cup of magical broth over the top (that is somehow both mildly flavored and addictively delicious), mix, and eat. Yum. Prices are fair, and the service is polite, friendly, and on the ball. Ambiance is casual and clean. Highly recommended.

We had a mixed beef bowl of Pho and a trio BBQ skewers (pork, chicken and shrimp) with vermicelli. The pho soup was flavorful with generous serving of beef in different cuts, tendons, biskets, stomach linings. The vermicelli with a well balanced sweet and sour sauce was just the perfect canvas for the succulent and juicy meat skewers that were well marinated with yummy lemongrass concoction. Will be back for more in the near future!

Small restaurant with bar stand and few televisions. Besides the typical Vietnamese dishes, they also sell banh mi sandwiches and bubble tea. I ordered pho with beef meatballs and the green tea flavored bubble tea. Both were good. They also had kids meal and it comes with a juice box. My kids enjoyed their meal of pho soup and rice with grilled pork. We will come back for sure when we are in the area.

It's really 3.5 stars. Being from Toronto, where we get way more Vietnamese food selection and being married to a Vietnamese family, on every vacation there is always the hunt for a good pho place. Yelp came through on this find. It's not the easiest place to find but parking is easily available. Place is clean, staffed by young teenagers staff - polite-ish but v. casual/loud in their gossiping/chit chat. Ordered a pho noodle, 3 bean drink and Bun bo Hue is really hard to get authentic. The food came out within a reasonable timeframe. The 3 bean drink was awesome, one of the better ones and I've had some bad ones. The green jelly bits didn't have enough flavor and the yellow bean was a sweet slurry instead of distinct beans but all mixed up, it was good. I didn't try the banh mi (vietnamese sandwiches) because you can get them for under $2 in Toronto and I don't want pay the 4.95 they're asking. Such is pricing when you have no competition I guess. The pho was decent, the broth a little salty but they give you bean sprouts, and 2 kinds of leaves which is better than most. Thou this is first vietnamese joint that I've been to that gives jalapeno slices instead of green chilis as the hot portion condiment which I found odd. I ordered a large and the portion was comparable to what I get in Toronto so it's a lot of food. Why not go for the large since it's a buck more? My hubby was okay with the Bun bo hue. The flavoring was off but not entirely off altogether. The staff is not necessarily Vietnamese so when we asked for extra cha (vietnamese sausage), they said they don't have it but when the bun bo hue came out, there were slices of cha in it. Whatever. I can't live on the 3 bean drink, but I think I'd be willing to give this place another shot if I'm in town again and look for another dish to try - maybe the vermicelli?

Just plain good! Easy to get in and out. The staff are kind and well mannered. I usually get the #9 which has the tripe, tendon etc... It is really good. From a culinary aspect, I would rather there be a little more fat in the broth, but that's my personal preference. My family enjoys the restaurant and we will continue to go there as long as it stays the excellent place it is.

Stopped by this place while visiting Newport News. I got the chicken pho and my friend got the beef pho. We also got Vietnamese Spring rolls. The service was great and the pho was absolutely perfect. I'm picky about broths and they have a really good one here. If I lived here I would definitely be a regular!

Good pho, slightly oily broth ... The place looks clean and modern, unlike most pho places, which are divey and bit sketchy looking in terms of cleanliness. Both the spring roll and pho were good; pho having flavorful broth with only a hint of oiliness.

3 Stars for food; 2 Stars for service. I'd come back here if someone else realllly wanted to go and they were paying. Food- I've had Pho a few times, so this time i decided to get the chicken skewers. I was served three large sized skewers with about a cup of cooked rice with some veggies and fish oil on the side. THe chicken was really well seasoned and was a good amount. It was a little too tough .. but still pretty good. My friend got the beef pho ( i think the number 6).. she liked hers but said that she has had better. The meat to broth proportion was pretty good. The large Pho seemed enough for two meals. It came served with a side of onions, jalapeno, basil (?) and lemon. Service- And herein lies the problem. One young(ish) looking guy was our server. He was nice, but really apathetic to us as patrons. I had to ask him twice to refill my soda, he did not bring a cup for my friend's hot water, forgot plates for our appetizer-- and did not once apologize for any of these errors. He also made the grave mistake of bringing our check out while we were still eating ! He kinda seemed like he was doing things at his own convenience- he printed out the check for all of his tables and just distributed them like he was handing out flyers to people on the street. He checked on us once, 2 min before he came back with the check. We were really unhappy with our service unfortunately. On the flip side , there was another server who was very nice, attentive and helped us get all the above mentioned things- even though he was waiting on other tables. The location is spotless and lucky enough to be so conveniently located in the shopping center right on jefferson with the panera and starbucks. Ill be back to maybe try their bubble tea, but ill get it to go.

My fav Vietnamese/pho spot in a 4 state radius. This place makes everything amazing. The staff of young men are always so polite and accommodating to our little girls. The Pho is perfectly seasoned, veggies are always fresh, and always pipping hot. Their Vermicelli bowl with both charbroiled beef/pork is nothing short of fantastic!! Just a right amount of charr on a well marinated piece of meat collectively with all the fresh toppings is what I dream amount. Their lotus salad is a texture heaven! I've never had anything like it. Thinly sliced pork, a few poached shrimp, strips of lotus root, puff shrimp toast/chips, cilantro, mint, and a concoction of "I don't know what" mixed in it all to make it a refreshing salad. Every Vietnamese joint I visit, I compare it to this place. P.S Taro Blended Bubble tea is crazy good!

Best Pho place I have found so far here in Newport News area. It's so good, I do my best to convince my husband to take me out at least once a week to get pho from this place :D Restaurant is located in a shopping center, lots of parking! I have never had an issue being seated. Right when your walk in, one of the fine gentlemen greet you and ask you to sit anywhere you like. When I go I normally order a bowl of Pho with tendon(my favorite) and meat balls. My husband also gets pho but with all the meats. My husband likes to order the slushy boba thai tea. Their thai tea is pretty awesome as well. I have tried their vietnamese vermicelli bowl, it was aight, I have had better. The pho is what has my husband and I coming back.

My friends and I tried this hot spot out a few days ago for lunch. The food was delicious, never had "pho" so it was pretty impressive. The prices were reasonable and the ambience was nice. Where they lack is in the customer service. The wait staff we had took over 20 minutes to bring us our water (which the restaurant wasnt busy for lunch on a Monday). It wasnt until we asked him 2x to bring us our water. Eventually, we told the manager about this incident and the owner apologized and talked to his employee. The moment the owner/manager turned his back, after reprimanding his staff for the lack of customer service, the wait staff made a mocking face behind his boss' back. How rude and unprofessional. We were taken back that we were stunned and wanted to leave as soon as possible. To accomodate the inconvenience, the manager assigned us another wait staff named Gei (Gee) D. He was phenomenol! If it wasnt for Gei, we would have walked away and never come back. But instead, because of his courtesy and politeness, always answering us with a "yes, maam" etc, he was the jackpot, because of him, we are coming back. We felt so good after having been serviced by a great staff that we all went above and beyond and tipped the heck out of him. Hahaha. We loved him! Thanks, Gei for making the experience worthwhile and sorry you had to clean up someone else's mistakes.

Great place for a rainy day! The Pho is pretty standard and the service is good. There is usually a quick turn-around on food orders, and it is always served to perfection. My hubby and I tried Pho 79 while visiting family. They have some of the better Vietnamese food we've had recently, and we plan to return during our next visit to the area. For appetizers, we tried the spring rolls and sugarcane shrimp. The spring rolls were good, but I'll ask them to leave off the pork the next time, as I just prefer these rolls without it. The sugarcane shrimp were a combo of ground shrimp and pork on sugarcane sticks, but there was a lot more pork than shrimp. It was tasty though! For entrees, we had two vermicelli dishes - grilled shrimp and meat combo (beef, pork, and chicken). The shrimp dish was wonderful, with nine large pieces of perfectly grilled shrimp in a bowl with vermicelli and vegetables. The chicken was the best in my hubby's grilled meat skewers. Service was quick and efficient. As I said, we'll definitely be back!

So. Good. My go to place for Pho, especially on those under-the-weather days that I need a pick me up. Great little place to check out with some friends for lunch or dinner. The pho is flavorful and packed with whichever meats you prefer. I always go for the #9: steak, brisket, flank, tendon, and tripe w/ a side of fresh spring rolls and peanut sauce.

Customer service is always superb in this restaurant. Every employee checks on you, no matter who your initial waiter/waitress was. I love the pho. I usually get a Ph1 and ask for my meat well done. What I particularly like about pho is that you can season it to how sweet or spicy you want it to be. The broth is very flavorful. If you don't like steak, you can eat chicken. If you don't like meat, you can get the vegetarian pho. I've never tried anything else on the menu besides the pho, but I've never seen a customer complain about any of their other food either.

This was my first visit to Pho 79, and I went in with fairly high expectations and I wasn't disappointed. We were seated immediately (although we did get there at 11:30) and we our order was taken quickly and efficiently. I ordered the Vegetarian Pho and it was full of lovely fresh vegetables cooked to perfection. My only complaint was the small portions of tofu (hence the 4 stars), especially when I saw how much chicken was in the Chicken Pho (albeit I did get a lot of veggies in my Pho too). I would have foregone some of the veggies for extra tofu. The portion sizes are pretty large (we ordered the small and that was difficult to finish - mind you, I managed to eat most of the best bits, but paid for it after lunch when I got back to my desk and just wanted to take a nap!) We were in and out in just over 45 minutes, which was perfect for our one hour lunch break. All in all, a great first experience :)

I was expecting quite a bit more from the other reviews. Service was a bit below average. It was cold in the restaurant. One of the bowls was cracked and leaking when we got it, and had to ask twice for a fork. The food was average. The experience wasn't horrible, but it's not somewhere I'd go to again.

I have eaten at Pho since it opened. I have enjoyed the food because it was flavorful, fresh, and the restaurant was clean. I went to eat there today and I was disappointed. The spring rolls were hard. I told the waitress and she brought another roll. It was the same as the one taken back. I asked for chili oil and she brought a container that had the chili on the sides of the container, several prints on the outside, and the chili was dry. The dish that I had was was good, the meat was warm. The tea was warm not hot. The waitress never came back to see if I needed anything and I had to wait to get someone's attention to get the bill. I don't plan on going back.

We went here for the first time and it was so good we went back the next day! Pho number 4 was very good and the large portion is huge! Enough for 2 people. The kabobs are amazing too. I didn't care for the infamous bubble tea. It wasn't sweet enough. They let me try two different flavors which was nice. Service was very good both times. There isn't just one server per table. They all check on you and bring the food. Will definitely return soon.

Really like the pho here. Broth is always tasty. Just once did my wife complain about the noodles being over cooked. Other than that I enjoyed everytime I come here. Customer service is great and the food is better. Also full out the door mostly because I get a large pho and crispy rolls.

I popped in to Pho 79 as I was feeling like trying somewhere different than my usual pho spot, Bamboo One. I left dissapointed. The prices are higher here on everything than at Bamboo One, but I chalked it up to being in a fancy newer shopping center and a larger building. I ordered tea and got a bag and a teapot. When I asked for a new bag after using the same single bag to make three pots the waitress was not happy with me. I'm sorry, I just don't like "near tea". I ordered the brisket pho which was simple enough. It looked fine and had the usual trappings (lime, basil, bean sprouts) but one taste told me something was off. They are using powered beef soup stock! In fact, I have the same exact brand at home (Thanks Asian marts). This made me suspicious so I slipped out of my chair to find the kitchen for a peek. Sure enough, there were rows of boxes and bags of powder for use in the bubble tea and to make the soup! If I wanted powder-based "quick soup" I'd hit an asian mart and make it myself for less. I'm not willing to pay high prices for things I can do myself. I think I'll stick to Bamboo One from now on.

The place a decent Vietnamese place, it was near a strip mall mall. I ordered the rice pork chop which was okay. It was nothing that wowed me and it was the traditional Vietnamese rice dish. We had some bubble tea that was good. I ordered the green tea and taro flavors to cap off the dinner.

Craving Pho, I decided to try this establishment as it had 4 stars on Yelp. My friend and I decided to get the spring rolls (shrimp only) as an appetizer. They were decent, average really but tasted fresh. I thought the slightly sweet dipping sauce was good but my friend found it to be too sweet. I ordered the Pho with round steak and brisket. I ordered the large and I was impressed with the amount of meat and noodles in the serving. The broth was that of an average Pho. I've had better, I've also had worse. The Pho came with a side of bean sprouts, jalapenos, basil and quarter lime. Standard side. Overall A-OK. The service at this establishment was not adequate. One star at best. First of all, the server smirked when I ordered hot water with lemon to drink. He then brought the hot water and lemon but did not bring a mug. We did not receive utensils or side plates for our appetizer. My friend ordered a refill on her soda and the server forgot. She had to ask again. The server checked on us once, the entire time we were there and that was moments before he brought the bill. He brought the bill before we were finished and that is a pet peeve of mine. I asked for containers for my Pho and veggies (I still had about 2/3 left). He brought me containers but no bag to carry them in. I had to ask for a bag. Overall, I was super frustrated. At this point i was definitely ready to leave. I'll end with one positive comment with regards to service. My friend changed her mind from the chicken Pho to chicken skewers within a few minutes of making our order and the staff obliged. That was appreciated.

I have no credibility when it comes to authentic Vietnamese food so I'm just going to review this for why I love it. The pho is this warm massive portion of comfort food. They have less intimidating toppings that make it really accessible who doesn't like chicken noodle soup or just simple beef and noodles. its completely customizable I love spicy so I always load up on the jalepenos and siracha. If you aren't in the mood for soup the egg rolls are super tasty crispy and love the dipping vinegar. I have tried a few of the rice dishes all were tasty but something about the pork one is just addicting. The employees keep it super casual so its one of my favorite lunch places it never has that empty vibe even when there are only a couple of customers there. This is my go to I don't feel good food and probably the best hangover cure you will ever find.

I'll keep it simple and concise: Very clean & well-kept. Nicely decorated and modern chic for a pho joint. Superb service from workers. Pho broth & portion is on point. Banh mi bread is super soft & moist. Bean sprouts and mint leaves are fresh. Two thumbs up!

  • Tawny A.

Their pho is definitely above average. I think their broth is excellent but my lack of five stars is because their vermicelli bun wasn't really as flavorful as it should have been. Otherwise- I love that they offer vegan add-ins and really will work with you to get the dish you want!

Growing up with a lot of Asian friends, mostly Vietnamese I was so happy when this place opened up a couple years ago. I had tried Pho before and had high expectations for this place. It's located in the Jefferson Commons area and thats a pretty nice area, there's lots chain restaurants and its near the PHF airport. The restaurant is located next to Tropical Smoothie and the parking immediately outside is full, but theres more parking nearby so its usually not a problem. The outside looks like the surrounding estalbishments, clean cut no frills. The inside is very spacious with large booths and tables. It works for a small group nothing too big. The customer service is perhaps one of the most annoying thing about this place. I've never met the owners but the guy who I believe is in charge seems like an old school kind of guy who is serious about his livelihood. However, the waiters/tress are mostly a lot of young hipster kids that have a nonchalant attitude in regards to their clients. I can't account for all of the servers but its a good majority. The food is pretty good though for being a chain-like place. Their spring rolls are yummy and they'll substitute the shrimp or meat with tofu which is always nice. The bowls come in two sizes and while the small size is suffient, the large one is only a tad bit cheaper. I usually opt for their fishball pho which is nice and fishy ( but in a good way) with lots of seafood items. My favorite though is their Vegan Pho, I'm not sure how Vegan it really is but it's damn good and filling. The Vegan Pho has large carrots, jumbo pieces of fried tofu, daikon slivers and bok choy among other veggies. With each Pho order you recieve a generous serving of bean sprouts, jalepenos herbs and lime slices. Theres also a nice selection for meat eaters and other nonsoup dishes. Overall, this place is your standard Vietnamese joint with popular dishes. I come here at least twice a year and will continue but I would love to find a better joint with rarer dishes.

My dining experiences have been good to very good as a whole. The three visits I had with guest were fine with the soup and other items to be filling and tasty. Service is a touch spotty, but aside from that this is a great stop and a nice diversion from all the other chains on Jefferson.

Went here last night for a quick dinner. We had the standard pho noodle soup which was delicious. We had the large however didn't appear to have more noodles than the regular size, just more soup. The broth was tasty. We didnt have any jalapeños offered with the bean sprouts. We also had the three color dessert however it wasn't that good. We just arrived here so nothing to compare it to. Nice, clean place. Probably will return.

Loved their soup. Broth was full of flavor, meat was plentiful, veggies fresh. Will go back again!

Spring Rolls were nice and fresh, peanut sauce was delicious. We ordered the Pho #4 & #9 and were both VERY pleased and full after we were done. Glass of wine and a bottle of beer to accompany. Was a perfect lunch on a Sunday. They had a stack of games for kids in the corner, so the place was very family friendly, date friendly, quiet yet comfortable. Great meal, highly recommend. Had been excited to try this place based on the reviews, left disappointed. It is appropriate that you drive on Bland Blvd to get here and sums up my experience. Came here with my brother, we both love Pho. Would easily describe it as one of my favorite foods. I guess I have been spoiled by places in Northern VA and Richmond (Pho So 1 specifically), found Pho 79 to be lacking. Just something very American about this place. From the faux Asian decor, the strip mall location, to the food and even the clientele (very few asians, a bad sign!). I ordered a Large 4 (round steak and brisket) and my brother had a Large 1 (round steak). First thing I noticed were lack of veggies. Not in volume just selection. It was nice to get a heaping pile of bean sprouts but there was no cilantro and no chili garlic at the table. The soup itself was not great. It tasted like a beef noodle soup, not so much pho. The broth was salty but overall not flavorful. It was like star anise (and other spices) were completely left out of the recipe (again, also no cilantro). Honestly just tasted like a beef broth, which may be the preference of some who don't care for the spice. My #4 was extremely meaty (another American preference I suppose), in fact too meaty I would say. I would prefer more flavor less meat. In the end, both me and my brother had to use far too much hoisin and sriracha just to get past the blandness. I don't want to be overly harsh but I would not recommend this place to anyone looking for authentic pho -- there is just no substitute for the real thing. If you are looking for a clean, bright place with friendly service for some beef noodle soup, then you probably won't be disappointed. Also, $2 for an ice tea? What is that about? I'll just mention at Pho So 1 in Richmond, I think ice tea might be a dollar or something but they have never ever charged me for it.

Maybe I was just too hungry tonight, I ordered Large, but felt "not full" afterward. The pho soup base was pretty good, although the pork sirloin slices were almost tasteless, maybe the flavor all went into the soup, but the shrimps were good and fresh. Service was a OK, (just about).

Food was cheap and bland. I saw the plate that I was given and was as excited about it as I am when I go to the dentist.

Just had takeaway Pho for lunch on the recommendation of a coworker. Really delicious and fragrant ... plenty of meat! Very filling, and a huge bowl of lunch. Had to supply my own large bowl to fit everything in. The jalapeno was quite breathtaking :-)

Good prices, fast service, fantastic broth. Seems pretty clean. Out of the 4 pho places I have tried in Hampton Roads, this is my fav.

I really wish that Yelp would allow its reviewers to give places half stars because I feel like this restaurant exemplifies a 3.5 star restaurant. On one hand, it has the best pho in NN - although to be fair that really isn't saying much. On the other hand, they have smallish portions AND charge (as another reviewer pointed out) about $1.50 more than the average pho place...or maybe a dollar more if one accounts for their somewhat upscale location in a nicer strip mall (which sounds like an oxymoron I know). Then of course was the weird Star Bucksy vibe the place had with its cadre of well coiffed, too cool for school young male servers who deigned on occasion to fill our drinks and really looked like the type of young men you would see as lunch time waiters in higher end bistros. The whole thing struck me as...trying too hard. That being said, people who are not hard core pho lovers who grew up on authentic pho places would probably like this place. I am not giving the place 4 stars because it is lacking a little something (better service maybe or more generous portions) but if you are craving pho in NN, this is the place to go.

Pho 79 is not like Mom's but close enough...the food is delicious, the decor is clean and a step above the usual Pho restaurant and the servers are nice and professional. I highly recommend that you immediately log off Yelp and proceed directly to this restaurant and have some Pho!

I ate here with a new friend of mine who recommended it. We went here last Sunday 10/07/12, and the place was hopping busy, which gave me pause... However, we were seated within 5 minutes of arriving, but then promptly we were forgotten about. Two guys of Asian descent sat at a table next to us a few minutes later, and were promptly given menus, ice water, etc. I told my friend: "it looks like we're the wrong race." The kind men at the table next to us handed us their menus when they noticed we were being ignored. We had to flag the manager down to get some service, who then took our orders. Again, we were forgotten about. We still had not gotten our waters, and flagged someone down again who walked away and forgot about us again. Finally, the manager came back and apologized and asked what we ordered again. Wow. The manager pulled out all the stops and got us our meals along with waters at the same time. We both got #4s: Fantastic! I had to give them 3 stars because of lackluster service.

Great pho! The place was busy for lunch on a Sunday but the staff kept up with the rush. The food was perfect!

This is about as Vietnamese as one can go in Newport News. There is another Vietnamese restaurant that is extremely icky in the ghetto. Don't go there. Pho 79 is NOT in a ghetto. It's clean and modern and located in a relatively safe strip mall. The food is good, if not spectacular. The grilled meat dishes (either with rice and noodle) can be excellent sometimes. I found the pork to be most consistently good. The noodle soup dishes can be a little spicier, but the broth has good, if mild, flavor. Beef (or fish cakes) in pork broth with noodles and vegetables. What's not to like?

Delicious broth and it is very inexpensive. The wait for the food was easily a half hour to forty-five minutes so if you walk in really hungry you're just going to be frustrated. The waiter acted like he didn't care about our service and only came to our table twice. One time to seat you and another time to give us our food. Only reason I gave them three stars is because the food was good.
